The Queensland Greyhound Racing Club advises that the Q2 Parklands meeting scheduled on Thursday, March 26 was abandoned after sections of the track were deemed unsuitable for racing.
Following standard raceday inspections, a number of sections of the track, including an outside section of the track within the catching pen were identified as being soft and holding excessive moisture, which created an inconsistent surface.
At all times, the welfare and safety of the greyhound is the highest priority and the decision to abandon the meeting was made by QRIC Stewards in consultation with the QGRC.
The track underwent routine maintenance earlier in the week – including harrowing on Monday – and the Club safely conducted trials as scheduled on Tuesday. Normal track preparation processes were then undertaken leading into Thursday’s meeting.
However, sections of the track retained excessive moisture, creating an inconsistency that did not meet safety standards.
Following the abandonment, QGRC track staff continued remediation works throughout Thursday evening and were comfortable the track was safe at the completion of those works. The Club can confirm that trial sessions were conducted safely on the Q2 track this morning.
The Club will undertake a review of the circumstances, including an assessment of contributing factors and will work closely with QRIC Stewards and Racing Queensland to ensure the Q2 track continues to perform to the required standard.
QGRC apologises to participants, stakeholders and patrons for any inconvenience caused and appreciates your understanding.
The Club remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety and integrity and will always place animal welfare first in its decision making.
